NICS AC Couch 2 5K (C25K) programme
The NI Civil Service Athletics Club (NICS AC) was set up 21 years ago with the primary purpose of encouraging and promoting the health, fitness and wellbeing of public servants through running.
So C25K was ideal for the Club to achieve this objective. The first programme was run at Stormont, and was very successful with 44 graduating in May 2107. From this it was agreed to organise another programme in Stormont Estate as well as one in the city centre.
People signed up for a variety of reasons, some were lapsed runners whilst others wanted to get fitter or lose some weight.
The city centre group ran on Monday and Wednesday lunchtimes and the Stormont group ran on Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes.
Each week, runners moved up a level, running for longer and resting for less, until by the 2nd December they were ready to run 5k at their own pace without stopping.
The official programme graduation took place at Stormont parkrun on Saturday 2nd December with most graduates exceeding their expectations in terms of finishing times. A few other graduates completed their graduation at other parkruns.
After the 5k run, graduates, their families and coaches came together for coffee and cake at a graduation ceremony in the Maynard Sinclair Pavilion where each graduate received their completion certificate and completion pack.
To date over 30 athletes have graduated from the second programme, bringing the total number of graduates from the NICS AC programmes to 78.
NICS AC has also introduced a follow-up programme “New Horizons” which aims to keep graduates running, improve their times and increase their distance – maybe even completing a 10k and beyond.
New Horizons is open to anyone, you don’t have to have completed the C25K programme or be a member of NICS AC to come along and take part.
We hope to run further C25K programme/s in 2018, more information will be issued in due course.
